The Significance of Cyanic Acid in the Urea- Tjrjxase System
نویسنده
چکیده
The close chemical relationship between cyanic acid and urea suggests a corresponding biochemical relationship whenever urea is synthesized or decomposed in animal or vegetable tissues. For this reason the zymolysis of urea was studied by the writer (1) to see if cyanic acid could be detected among the products of the reaction, which would indicate that the enzyme decomposition of urea proceeds along the same lines as the normal decomposition of urea in solution by acids, alkalies, or heat. The data obtained led to the conclusion that cyanic acid occurs in the urea-urease system. Mack and Villars (6) also claim to have detected cyanic acid under similar conditions, although they do not ascribe any particular significance to its presence. Quite recently Sumner (ll), working with an extremely active preparation of jack bean urease, has failed to find any indication ,of the formation of cyanic acid during the zymolysis of urea. Sumner has employed the same analytical technique as the writer, and his results raise the question of the accuracy of the present methods of detecting cyanic acid in complex mixtures, and the validity of the assumption that the cyanic acid comes from the action of the enzyme on the substrate, and not from some other source.

Studies of the Intermediate Products Formed during the Hydrolysis of Urea by Urease”
In 1923, Fearonl stated that he had been able to detect traces of cyanic acid in solutions in which urea was being decomposed by soy bean urease. He proposed that the reaction concerned is not a true hydrolysis, but rather a cleavage of the urea molecule into cyanic acid and ammonia and that the cyanic acid is at once spontaneously hydrolyzed to ammonia and carbon dioxide.2 Sumner,3 in 1926, ob...
متن کاملUrease. Part II. The Mechanism of the Zymolysis of Urea.
Since this paper was submitted for publication, a paper has appeared on the mechanism of urease by Mack and Villars [1923]. In this paper the authors agree with the present writer in accepting the Werner formula for urea. They have detected and estimated cyanate in solutions of urea undergoing zymolysis, and also have shown that the cyanate rises to a maximum and falls again towards the end of ...
متن کاملSorption Study of Acid Blue in Aqueous Solution by Synthetic Poly Urea-Formaldehyde
Poly urea-formaldehyde was synthesized simply and rapidly from urea and formaldehyde by condensation polymerization and studied for the sorption of trace acid blue from aqueous solution. The optimum pH value for sorption of the acid blue was 4. Experimental results showed that the sorption capacity of poly urea-formaldehyde for acid blue was determined. The synthetic polymer can be reused for 5...

متن کاملEffect of olive (Olea europaea) extract on levels of urea and uric acid in normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats
Increasing the level of urea and uric acid is an associated complication of diabetes mellitus. Many spices and herbs are known to be hypoglycaemic. Olea europaea belonging to the family oleaceae is widely used in herbal medicine for the treatment of diabetes. The present study was carried out to investigate the role of the alcoholic extract from leaves of olive on level of urea and uric acid in...
